Special Teams Shine as UMass Dartmouth Defeats Men’s Ice Hockey; 7-1

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University men's ice hockey team fell to UMass Dartmouth by a score of 7-1 in MASCAC action Saturday afternoon in Framingham. With the win the Corsairs improve to 11-7 and 7-5 in the league. The Rams are now 2-16 and 1-11 in conference play.

The Corsairs got on the board just a little over three minutes into the game when Mike Kelly (Stoneham, Mass.) scored short-handed with assists from Casey Shea (Woburn, Mass.) and Joe Echelmeier (Doylestown, PA). The visitors scored again a few moments later when Matt Baldino (Woburn, Mass.) tallied an unassisted goal.

The Rams answered in the 2nd when Tyler Colacchio (Bellingham, Mass.) scored off Keith Barnaby's (Leominster, Mass.) face off win. 

The visitors tallied three straight goals to take a 5-1 advantage to the second intermission. Casey Shea (Woburn, Mass.) scored short-handed with Jay Clarke (Forston, GA) assisting. Then Brandon Berkley (Scottsdale, AZ) found the back of the net with help from Steven Leonard (Rockaway Park, NY) and Davis Skarbek (Hyannis, Mass.). UMD scored again short-handed with just over seven minutes to play in the period when Shea scored again short-handed with Mike Kelly (Stoneham, Mass.) on the helper. 

UMD added two third period goals to reach the final margin. In the ninth minute of the period Baldino scored again with assists from Kelly & Shea. Then in the final minute Berkley scored his second of the game with assists from Brendan McDonough (Wilmington, Mass.) and Mason Nichols (Oviedo, FL).

Drew Michael (Newton, Mass.) made 33 saves in the win for the Corsairs before being relieved by Jacob Ferrerira (Westport, Mass.). Greg Harney (East Haven, Conn.) played the first 32:50 in net for the Rams before giving way to Adam Calabrese (Philadelphia, PA).

The Corsairs were 2-for-9 on the power play and scored three shorthanded goals.

The Rams return to the ice on Thursday, February 2nd when travel to Fitchburg State in MASCAC play. The Corsairs will host Worcester State on the same day.
