Plymouth Drops Hockey in Home Opener

Framingham, Mass.- The Framingham State men's hockey team lost their home opener by a score of 10-1 to Plymouth State Thursday evening at Loring Arena. With the win the Panthers improve to 4-2 (3-0 MASCAC) while the Rams fall to 1-4 (0-3 MASCAC).

Plymouth scored on the power play in the 8th and 9th minutes to take a quick 2-0 lead. Michael Economos (Crystal Lake, IL) scored the first tally with Tim Perron (Northboro, Mass.) and Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, NJ) assisting. Then just over a minute later Chris Zuccaro (Hudson, NH) sent one home with Volonnino assisting again.

The visitors added two more later in the period when Ryan Stevens (Colleyville, TX) scored shorthanded with Volonnino earning his 3rd assist in as many goals. PSU added another tally in the final minute, this time with Tim Larocque (Middleboro, Mass.) earning the score and Quinn Carroll (Amherst, NH) assisting.

PSU opened the second frame with another shorthanded goal when Stevens grabbed a turnover in the neutral zone and beat the Rams goaltender on the breakaway. Volonnino scored a goal of his own at the six-minute mark of the 2nd with Ludvig Steenberg (Stockholm, Sweden) and Cam Cundy (Portsmouth, NH) assisting to send the visitors to the 2nd intermission up 6-0.

Plymouth State opened up the 3rd frame with a power play goal off the stick of Steenberg, his second of the game.

The Rams were able to break though in the 6th minute of the 3rd when Tyler Colacchio (Bellingham, Mass.) scored on the power play with Vaughn Guetens (Cheshire, Conn.) and Matt Bauchman (Methuen, Mass.) assisting.

PSU scored short-handed goals by Stevens who finished with a hat trick and Kyle Orgel (El Segundo, CA) to push the lead to 9-1. Orgel then scored again on a power play in the final minute to reach the 10-1 margin.

Thierry Messervier (Montreal, QC) earned the win in net making ten saves over the first 33:54 of the game, he was relieved by Andreas Pettersson (Trolhattan, Sweden) who made 6 saves in the final 26:06. Adam Calabrese (Philadelphia, PA) made 21 saves in net for the Rams before giving way to Matt Pearless (Framingham, Mass.) who made 8 stops.

The Rams return to action on Saturday, November 19th when they host Westfield State in MASCAC action. The Panthers host Fitchburg State on the same day.
