Men’s Ice Hockey Sink Corsairs; 2-1

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University men's ice hockey team defeated the UMass- Dartmouth Corsairs 2-1 in MASCAC action Saturday evening at Loring Arena in Framingham.

With the victory the Rams improve to 5-13-2 (4-9-1 MASCAC) and the Corsairs slip to 6-13-2 (5-7-2 MASCAC).

The Rams opened up the scoring in the 15th minute when junior Melvin Nichols (Alexandria, VA) recovered a loose puck in front of the net and snuck it past the UMD goalie to put the Rams up 1-0.

Just under 5 minutes into the 2nd stanza the Rams were called for a hooking penalty, before the whistle was blown the Corsairs were able to tie the game when Casey Shea (Woburn) found the back of the net. The Rams then had to serve the penalty but the Corsairs could not capitalize.

Less than three minutes later the Rams answered with what would prove to be the game winning goal. Senior Ryan McDonald (Ankorage, AK) poked in a rebound off an initial shot from Brendan McCarron (Millbury) who was credited with an assist on the play.

The Rams had a great opportunity late in the third period to extend the lead when they had a 5-3 power play for 1:47 but could not find the back of the net.

The Rams were called for a penalty with 1:48 to play giving the Corsairs a man advantage for the remainder of regulation but they could not capitalize.

The Rams were 0-for-3 on the man advantage and the Cosairs were 0-for-4 with the extra-man. Alessio Muggli (Rueti, Switzerland) made 31 saves for the Rams and JJ Solloway (Derry, NH) turned away 26 shots for the Corsairs.

The Rams return to the ice when they travel to Salem St. on Thursday 2/12 with the opening faceoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Corsiars will travel to Plymouth State the same day with action scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
