PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team exploded for its highest output in nine years Thursday evening, rolling past Framingham State University, 12-2, in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink.

Junior Andrew Wigg (Lantz, Nova Scotia) led the Panthers with three goals, while sophomore Mike Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and freshman Chris Zuccaro (Hudson, N.H.) potted two goals and an assist apiece.  PSU improved to 8-7-3 overall and maintain a hold on first place in the MASCAC with an 8-2-1 mark, while the Rams fell to 3-11-2 overall and 2-8-1 in conference play.

The 12 goals is the most for Plymouth State in a game since a 13-3 victory at Worcester State University on Feb. 18, 2006.

Four other Panthers also collected three points apiece, as seniors Mike Freitag (Westmont, Ill.) and Chad Barthelmess (Norristown, Pa.) and sophomore Eric Strom (Gothenberg, Sweden) tallied a goal and two assists each, and senior Zach Sarig (Reading, Pa.) piled up three assists. 

PSU racked up seven first-period goals and never looked back. Freshman Riley Flanagan (Weymouth, Mass.) and Strom made it 2-0 in the first five minutes of the game.

Sophomore Vaughn Guetens (Cheshire, Conn.) put the Rams on the board at the 7:12 mark, but PSU answered with five unanswered goals before the period was out for a 7-1 advantage. Wigg and junior Colt Smelstor (Fairfax, Va.) scored goals just two minutes apart midway through the frame, and Economos, Wigg and Zuccaro all scored in the final two minutes of the period.

Economos notched a power play goal for PSU to open the second-period scoring, and Freitag stole the puck and went in alone for a shorthander at 10:51. Zuccaro added his second of the game two minutes later, and Barthelmess tacked on a power play goal late in the period to make it 11-1. 

Each team added a goal in the third period, with Wigg finishing off his hat trick midway through the stanza, and senior Brendan McCarron (Millbury, Mass.) closing out the scoring for Framingham State with a power play goal with three minutes to play.

PSU junior Gordon Ceasar (Oak Park, Calif.) made 10 saves on 11 shots in 24 minutes between the pipes, while senior Zac Enstrom (South Windsor, Conn.) came off the bench to make 14 saves on 15 shots in the final 36 minutes.  Three Rams goalies combined for 22 saves.

The Panthers are home again on Saturday, hosting Westfield State University on Salute the Troops Night at Hanaway Rink (6:00 p.m.). Framingham State plays a non-conference game Saturday at Stonehill College (4:10 p.m.).
