Men’s Ice Hockey Falls to Salem; 5-3

Framingham, Mass.- The Framingham State University men's ice hockey team allowed two third period goals to fall to conference opponent Salem State 5-3 Saturday afternoon at Loring arena in Framingham.

With the loss the Rams are now 2-10-2 and 1-7-2 in the league. The Vikings improve to 7-7-2 with a 5-3-1 MASCAC clip.

Salem opened the scoring in the second minute when John Needham (Medway) found the back of the net. The Rams quickly answered with a goal from Brendan McCarron (Millbury) just under a minute later.

Both team traded two goals each in the second frame and the game was knotted at 3 heading to the third period. With less than eight minutes to play Cameron Banwell (Toronto, ON) put a rebound off the Rams goaltender into the back of the net for the eventual game winning goal. The Vikings added an insurance goal with just under a minute to play when Michael Casale (Stoney Creek, ON) beat the Rams keeper to extend the lead to 5-3.

Casale and Banwell finished with a goal and an assist each. Derek Makimaa (Swartz Creek, MI), John Needham (Medford) & Gabriel Cromp (Montreal, Quebec) all scored goals for the Vikings. Kristofer Faric (Whiby, ON) & Andrew Bettencourt (Riverrside, RI) both collected two assists each.

The Rams goals came from McCarron, Jay Nicholls (Middleton) & Richard O'Connor (North Andover) and Dylan Cosford (Windsor, ON) collected two assists.

Marcus Zelzer (Green Bay, WI) made 29 saves for the Vikings and Alessie Muggli (Rueti, Switzerland) made 39 saves for the Rams.

The Rams return to action on Thursday, January 22nd when they host Worcester State at 7:40 p.m. The Vikings travel to New England College on Tuesday, January 20th.
