Ice Hockey Holds on for 3-2 Victory over Assumption

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University ice hockey team received a goal and an assist from junior Melvin Nichols (Alexandria, VA) as the Rams defeated Assumption College 3-2 in non-conference action this evening at Loring Arena.   

With the win, the Rams improve to 2-6-1on the season, while the Greyhounds slip to 5-8.

Senior Jay Nicholls (Middleton, Mass.) staked the Rams a 1-0 lead with just under six minutes remaining in the opening period.  Melvin Nichols sent a pass to Jay Nicholls off a face off and Nicholls wristed a shot into the back of the net.

The Rams extended the lead four minutes into the second.  Junior Ricky O'Connor (North Andover, Mass.) fired a shot on net that was saved, but Melvin Nichols was there to knock home the rebound for the 2-0 lead.

Assumption cut the lead in half with 4:28 remaining in the second when junior Alex Erban (Attleboro, Mass.) scored unassisted off a face off.  The Rams pushed the lead back to two with 19 seconds left in the second when they capitalized on a 5-on-3 opportunity as sophomore Vaughn Guetens (Cheshire, Conn.) scored off assists from Cameron Hoffman (Fort Stevens, WA) and Keith Barnaby (Leominster, Mass.).

Assumption pulled back within one midway through the third.  Freshman Brian Farrell (Island Park, NY) made a nice move and found the back of net unassisted for his second of the year cutting the deficit to 3-2. The Greyhounds would have a chance in the final minute of play as they pulled the goalie for the extra skater.  Senior Matt Dalton (Medway, Mass.) had a good look at the net with six seconds remaining, but sophomore Alessio Muggli (Rueti, Switzerland) was able to come up with the save and secure the victory.

The Greyhounds outshot the Rams 34-30 in the game and converted on 1-of-6 with the man advantage.  The Rams found the back of the net on one of their three power play opportunities in the game.  Mugglie recorded his second victory in net making 32 saves, while junior Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn.) made 27 stops in a losing effort.

The Rams are back in action when they travel to Franklin Pierce for a non-conference contest beginning at 3 p.m., while the Greyhounds are idle until January 6th.
