Late Goals Propels Ice Hockey to 5-5 Draw with UMass Dartmouth

Framingham, Mass. – Freshman Keith Barnaby (Leominster, Mass.) scored with ten seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game and force overtime as the Framingham State University ice hockey team skated to a 5-5 draw with the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at Loring Arena.

With the draw, both teams are now 0-1-1 on the year and 0-0-1 in the conference.

UMass Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead after one on a goal from Shaun Walter off feeds from Casey Shea and Jerr Laakso.

The Rams tied the game just 1:15 into the second on Ricky O'Connor's (North Andover, Mass.) goal off a Cam Coburn (Fresno, CA) assist.  The tie would not last long as Jaret Babych put the Corsairs back on top 2-1 with just over 15 left in the frame.

The Rams scored a pair of goals 18 seconds apart to take their first lead of the day.  Senior Brendan McCarron (Millbury, Mass.) scored at 7:00 and classmate Ryan McDonald (Anchorage, AK) intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and fired for a wrist shot on net for the 3-2 advantage.

UMass Dartmouth closed the period with a pair of goals to retake the lead 4-3 after two.  Babych tallied his second of the game – a shorthanded marker – at 13:10 and Mike Restuccia followed at 14:24.

UMass Dartmouth pushed the lead back to two when John Sartell knocked home a rebound just under five minutes into the third. The lead would stand until the final two minutes of the game.  McCarron cut the deficit to one with his second of the game at 18:12.  The Rams pulled the goaltender with just over a minute remaining and had a goal waved off with 26 seconds left after the net came off. The Rams kept the pressure on the Corsairs and Barnaby was able to knock home the puck with 10 seconds remaining after a flurry of shots in front of the net.

The Rams outshot the Corsairs 49-32 in the game.  Sophomore Alessio Muggli made 27 saves for the Rams, while JJ Solloway made 44 stops for the Corsairs.
