Ice Hockey Trumps Worcester State 4-2 On Senior Night

Framingham, Mass. – Senior goaltender Nick Cafrelli (San Jose, CA) recorded 15 third period saves and senior forward Daniel Miressi (Monroe, Conn.) recorded a pair of assists as the Framingham State University ice hockey team defeated Worcester State 4-2 this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Framingham's Loring Arena.   

With the victory the Rams improve to 9-8-4 on the year and 7-4-3 in the conference which places them second in the MASCAC standings. The Lancers slip to 8-11-1 overall and 4-9-1 in the MASCAC.

Junior forward Brendan McCarron (Millbury, Mass.) recorded a pair of goals for the rams in the game, while senior Daniel Roy (Billerica, Mass.) and freshman Andrew Mathieu (Manchester, NH) each scored once.  Miressi and freshman defenseman Vaughn Guetens (Cheshire, Conn.) picked up a pair of assists a piece.

Junior forward Andrew Bates (Marblehead, Mass.) scored both of Worcester's goals, while senior Derek Serbon (Crown Point, IN) recorded the Lancers only assist of the game.

After a scoreless first period, Bates put the Lancers on top just over five minutes into the second after the Rams turned the puck over in the neutral zone and he broke away down the right side.

The Rams would take the lead for good with a pair of power play goals midway through frame.  Mathieu tallied his first collegate goal at 10:26 and McCarron followed two minutes later with his first of the game.  Miressi fed the puck from behind the cage to McCarron in front who converted for his 12th of the season.  Roy would extend the Rams lead to 3-1 with his marker at 13:23, but Bates cut the deficit back to one with a shorthanded goal in the final minute of the second.

McCarron tacked on a power play goal just under six minutes into the third to reach the final margin.

The Rams outshot the Lancers 44-31 in the game, but the visitors held a 15-8 edge in the final period.  Cafrelli finished the game with 29 saves, while Salvatore Tecci (Franklin, Mass.) made 40 stops for the Lancers.

Prior to the game the Rams recognized their nine seniors – Miressi, Cafrelli, Roy, forward Dan Bogdan (Westfield, Mass.), forward Eric Ward (Haverhill, Mass.), defenseman Bo Driscoll (Chelmsford, Mass.), forward Ray Potestio (Queens Villiage, NY), forward Tom Tracy (Wakefield, Mass.) and goaltender Herbert Kyles (Overland Park, KS).

The Rams are back to action on Tuesday afternoon when they host Salem State at 4:50 p.m., while the Lancers entertain Fitchburg State on Monday at 2 p.m.
