UMass Dartmouth Edges Ice Hockey 2-1

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University ice hockey team surrendered two first period goals as they were defeated 2-1 by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at Framingham's Loring Arena.   

The Corsairs avenged an early season 5-4 last second loss to the Rams as they improve to 3-9-2 on the year and 3-5 in the conference.  The loss is the third straight for the Rams who fall to 6-6-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the MASCAC.

Despite dominating play in the first period and outshooting the Corsairs 17-7, the Rams trailed by a pair of goals after one.  Junior Shaun Walters (Plymouth, MI) staked the visitors a 1-0 lead when he converted off a feed from sophomore Mike Restuccia (Malden, Mass.) with just over six minutes remaining in the first.  Five minutes later, freshman Tanner Zacharewicz (Ludlow, Mass.) converted on the power play for the eventual game winner and his fourth of the season.

The Rams cut the Corsair lead in half just 1:24 into the second as junior Brendan McCarron (Millbury, Mass.) found the back of the net for the seventh time this season.  UMass Dartmouth net minder J.J. Solloway (Derry, NH) turned away 23 of the Rams first 24 shots to maintain the one goal lead heading into the third.

Framingham senior Eric Ward (Haverhill, Mass.) had a shot at an open net with two minutes remaining in the third, but could not convert.  The Rams added the extra skater in the final 45 seconds as they played with an open net, but could not find the back of the cage.

The Rams outshot the Corsairs 33-19 in the game and the Corsairs were 1-of-5 with the man advantage.  Solloway recorded his first victory in net making 32 saves, while senior Nick Cafrelli (San Jose, CA) made 17 saves and was tagged with the loss.

The Rams are back in action on Saturday afternoon with a MASCAC contest at Salem State beginning at 2 p.m., while Corsairs travel to Plymouth State on Saturday for a MASCAC tilt at 6 p.m.
