Ice Hockey Falls to Conference Leader Plymouth State

Framingham, Mass. – The Plymouth State University ice hockey team tallied a pair of second period goals to defeat the Framingham State University Rams 4-2 this afternoon in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) ice hockey contest at Loring Arena.

With the win, the Panthers are now 15-6 on the year and remain atop the MASCAC standings at 11-3, while the Rams fall to 2-17-1 overall and 0-13-1 in the conference.

The Panthers received two points from junior Phil Arnone (Litchfield, NH) in the game on a goal and a helper, while senior Alex Cottle (West Chester, PA), junior Dave Walters (Ottowa, ON) and freshman Josh Woody (Sunderland, MD) each tallied goals for the visitors. 

Cottle scored what proved to be the game winner for the Panthers midway through the second period.  The goal was the 100th point in Cottle's career with the Panthers.  He became the 9th Panther to reach the 100 point milestone and now has 26 goals and 74 assists in 85 games for Plymouth State.

The Rams were led offensively by juniors Eric Ward (Haverhill, Mass.) and Daniel Roy (Billerica, Mass.) who each scored while senior Eric Walsh (Haverhill, Mass.), junior Corey Dinwiddie (Valencia, CA), sophomores Dean Cavicchi (Plymouth, Mass.) and Matt Schafer (Gales Ferry, Conn.) each picked up assists.

Plymouth State jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the game as Woody tallied his 4th of the season and Arnone scored shorthanded.  Ward cut the deficit in half for the Rams with a power play goal at 6:58 and Roy tied the game at 15:22 with his 4th of the season.

The Panthers would retake the lead for good in the second as Cottle scored at the 11:00 mark and Walters added a shorthanded tally at 19:02 to reach the final margin.

The Panthers outshot the Rams 43-36 in the game and were 0-of-4 on the power play, while the Rams went 1-of-8 with the man advantage.  Junior Nick Cafrelli made 39 saves for the Rams but was tagged with the loss, while senior Jack Astedt (Angelholm, Sweeden) made 34 stops to secure his 11th victory of the season between the pipes.

The Rams return to action on Thursday evening when they travel to Westfield State in MASCAC matchup beginning at 7:35 p.m., while the Panthers host Salem State on Saturday, February 9th at 6 p.m.
