Westfield Defeats Ice Hockey 4-1

Westfield, Mass. – The Westfield State University men's ice hockey team snapped a seven game losing streak by defeating Framingham State University, 4-1, this evening.

The Owls are 2-6-1 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference and 3-9-2 overall. Framingham is now 1-9-3 overall and 1-6-2 in the conference, including a 3-3 tie last Saturday vs. first place Plymouth State.

Westfield scored two first-period goals to take a 2-0 lead. A.J. Shiverdecker scored a power play goal 4:37 into the game after converting a missed teammate's shot in front of the net. Rory Wilkowich whipped a nice wrist shot from the left dot for the second goal midway thru the first stanza.

After a scoreless second period, Westfield took a 3-0 lead on an Adam Baldassarre goal on a scramble near the net. The Rams finally got on the scoreboard with 2:18 remaining in regulation on a goal by sophomore Bo Driscoll (Chelmsford, Mass.) off assists from junior Ben Pacific (Marlborough, Mass.) and senior Chris Giebe (Grinheide, Germany). Jason Nelson tallied an empty net goal with 10 seconds remaining to reach the final margin of 4-1.

Senior goalie Ian Wilson made 33 saves in net for the Owls as Westfield outshot Framingham, 38-34.  Framingham State sophomore goaltender Nick Cafrelli (San Jose, CA) made 34 stops.

The Rams return to action on Thursday evening at Loring Arena when they host Worcester State University at 7:20 p.m.
