Ice Hockey Falls in Overtime 2-1 at WNE

Springfield, Mass. – Senior forward Mike Kaselouskas (East Longmeadow, MA) scored the game-winner with 1:07 remaining in overtime to lead Western New England to a 2-1 win over Framingham State in a non-conference contest on Thursday evening at Smead Arena. 

The Golden Bears improve to 7-3 on the year; while the Rams slip to 1-7-2 overall.

The Rams opened the scoring with the lone goal of the opening period at 10:25 as freshman forward Ryan McDonald (Anchorage, AK) buried a chance that was set-up by classmate Brendan McCarron (Millbury, MA). 

Western New England leveled the score at 9:31 of the second as senior forward Kory Grahl (San Diego, CA) netted a power play goal on assists from freshman forward Brandon Stroud (Clarksville, IN) and Kaselouskas.

After a scoreless third period which saw each team put ten shots on net, the Golden Bears held a 6-2 edge in shots in the overtime session. 

Kaselouskas ripped his shot top shelf to beat FSU sophomore goalkeeper Nick Cafrelli (San Jose, CA). He was assisted on the play by sophomore forward Trent Krueger (White Bear Lake, MN) and Stroud.

Overall, WNE enjoyed a 37-27 advantage in shots on goal. 

WNE sophomore goalkeeper Eric Sorenson (Fairport, NY) turned away 26 shots to earn his seventh win between the pipes this season, while Cafrelli made 35 stops in the losing effort.

The Golden Bears return to action on Saturday as they travel to Connecticut College for a 3:00 p.m. non-league game , while the Rams are off until next Thursday evening when they travel to Fitchburg State at 7 p.m.
