Ice Hockey Falls to Plymouth State 4-2

Plymouth, N.H. – Junior Seth Phelan (Bristol, Conn.) recorded a goal and two assists Thursday evening to lead Plymouth State University to a 4-2 victory over Framingham State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink.

PSU rallied from a 2-0 deficit with four unanswered goals in the second period.  The Panthers went on to improve to 4-0 on the season (2-0 MASCAC) while the Rams are 0-2 overall (0-1 MASCAC).

Framingham State jumped in front with a pair of first-period power play goals.  Sophomore Daniel Miressi (Monroe, Conn.) stuffed home a rebound at 7:06 and freshman Matt Schafer (Gales Ferry, Conn.) tallied his first career goal at 19:02, and the Rams took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Plymouth State got on the board at the 5:37 mark of the second period.  After coming up empty on a five-minute power play to start the period due to a major penalty, junior Richie Zobak (Evergreen Park, Ill.) scored for the Panthers at 5:37 after making a nifty move around a defender. Sophomore Dave Walters (Ottawa, Ont.) tallied a power play goal, his first of the season, to tie the game at 2-2 at the 11:44 mark.

PSU pulled ahead at 15:24 when Phelan potted the eventual game-winner, and junior Phil Moore (New Glasgow, N.S.) rounded out the second period scoring with his second of the season at 18:02.

Penalties filled the third period but neither team was able to score and the home team held on for the win. Shots on goal wound up even for the game, 38-apiece. Framingham State was 2-for-8 on the power play and PSU was 1-for-11.

PSU junior goalie Jack Astedt (Angelholm, Sweden) made 36 saves to post his fourth win without a loss this season, while sophomore Nick Cafrelli (San Jose, Calif.) made 34 saves for the Rams.

The Panthers are back on the ice next Tuesday, Nov. 22, when they travel to nationally-ranked (#3) Castleton State College for a 7:00 p.m. face-off.  The Rams play their home opener Saturday vs. Westfield State University (7:30 p.m.)
