Ice Hockey Falls 5-2 at UMass Dartmouth

New Bedford, Mass - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth ice hockey team outscored visiting Framingham State 3-1 in the third period en route to 5-2 win in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Saturday.

Senior forward Todd Bartelson (Pepperell, Mass.) took a pass from senior forward Billy Manning (Stoughton, Mass.), who won a face-off in the offensive zone, and scored at 2:02 of the third period to make it a 3-1 game.

Framingham State sophomore forward Ben Pacific (Marlborough, Mass.) batted home a rebound with the Rams on the power play at 3:26 to make it 3-2, but senior forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, Mass.) converted a pass from sophomore forward Dan Dempsey (Norwell, Mass.) to make it 4-2 at 6:53.

UMD senior Jason Stahl (Londonderry, N.H.) scored an empty net goal with 30 seconds remaining to complete the scoring.

UMass Dartmouth took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission, scoring a pair of power play goals 1:58 apart. Freshman defenseman Ryan Hurd (Mound, MN) scored his first goal as a Corsair on a slap shot from the point at 13:18. Senior defenseman Adam Horgan (Clayton, NC) and sophomore forward Bill Colclough (Naples, FL) assisted. Hurd then set up junior forward Mike Owens' (South Boston, Mass.) goal at 15:16, dropping a pass to Owens, who fired home a wrist shot.

Framingham State had taken an early 1-0 lead when freshman forward Ken Tanaka (Wayland, Mass.) picked up a loose puck and scored unassisted at 4:35 of the first period.

The Corsairs outshot Framingham State 36-22 in the game. Senior goaltender Collin Tracy (Medford, Mass.) made 20 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while freshman Nick Cafrelli (San Jose, CA) made 31 stops for Framingham State. Each team drew nine penalties with UMass Dartmouth converting two power play opportunities, while the Rams scored one power play goal.

UMD improved to 12-5-1 and 7-3-1 in the MASCAC with the victory, while FSU fell to 2-12-1 and 2-9-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Fitchburg State next Thursday evening, while the Rams will visit Stonehill on Wednesday.
