Ice Hockey Falls to Salem State 9-1

Salem, Mass. – The Salem State University ice hockey team improved to 5-1 on the year and 3-1 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) with a 9-1 victory over the Framingham State University Rams on Thursday evening at Rockett Arena. 

Casey Terreri (Warwick, RI) put Salem State up early with his third goal of the season just 2:28 into the opening frame on a power-play opportunity with assists from Gio Capodanno (Mountainside, NJ) and Ian Flanagan (New Hampton, NH). Nick Lampson found the back of the net with just over 3:00 minutes remaining in the first period as Capodanno and Terreri were credited with the assists to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead before the break. 

Mike Colleran (Mansfield, Mass.) cut the deficit to 2-1 for Framingham State (0-6, 0-4) 5:33 into the second before Salem State scored five goals in a 10 minute span to break the game wide open. Josh Franklin (Wrentham, MA) and Dan Smolinsky (Plymouth, MA) scored three minutes apart to give the Vikings a 4-1 lead. Capodanno's fourth goal of the season pushed the lead to 5-1 before Flanagan added two more scores, including a power play goal with 1:00 minute remaining in the second. 

Derek Crocker (Wakefield, MA) and Alex Eisath (Renon, Italy) closed out the scoring in the third to make the final 9-1. 

Capodanno finished the night with a goal and three assists while Flanagan chipped in two goals and an assist for the Vikings. 

Terence Sullivan (Shirley, MA) suffered the loss for the Rams making 23 saves before being pulled for Nicholas Cafrelli (San Jose, CA), who made 30 saves. 

Sam Avoine (Ste. Perpetue, Quebec) picked up his second win stopping nine shots before Ryan Sutcliffe (Grand Forks, ND) came on in the final period for Salem State to make four saves. 

The Vikings fired off 62 shots to just 18 for Framingham State and finished 2-for-8 on the power play. 

Salem State is back in action on Saturday when they host Westfield State at 2 p.m., while the Rams host Plymouth State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
