Ice Hockey Falls at Fitchburg State 5-1

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team registered three first period goals and never looked back, topping Framingham State University, 5-1 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) ice hockey action this evening.

In the first period, Fitchburg State posted a trio of scores for an early 3-0 lead at the break. Junior Cory Callen (Annadale, N.J.) opened the Falcons scoring at 5:12 of the first period, taking a feed from classmate Travis Bertolotti (Miller Place,N.Y.) and senior Billy Pescosolido (Framingham, Mass.) for his first score of the game.

Less than two minutes later, Fitchburg State grabbed a 2-0 advantage as sophomore Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.) hit home for his second goal of the season, using a pair of assists from Thomas McAleer (East Islip, N.Y.) and Justin Quinn (Braintree, Mass.). Callen then capped the Falcons' first period scoring, posting his second marker of the contest midway through the frame.

In the second period, Fitchburg State increased its lead early, taking a 4-0 margin at 3:11 of the stanza. Quinn sparked the Falcon rally using a dish from Bertolotti for a short-handed scored and his third tally of the season. Junior Kris Threlkeld (Centerville, Ohio) followed suit just five minutes later as the third-year forward recorded the Falcons second short-hander of the night at the 8:36 mark.

Over the final period, Framingham State erased the Falcons shot at a shutout as freshman Peter Baldwin (Pot Williams, Nova Scotia) collected his first collegiate goal off senior captain John Sheehan's (Stoughton, Mass.) assist.

Fitchburg State received a solid offensive from Trevor Lawler, who paced the Falcons' with three points, including the game-winning marker at 6:27 of the first period. Bertolotti was also strong in the Falcons first conference victory with three assists, while Cory Callen added two scores on the night.

In the crease, senior Robert Vorse (Leominster, Mass.) stopped 32 of the Rams 33 shots. For the Rams, freshman Nicholas Cafrelli (San Jose, Calif.) suffered the loss, posting 29 saves in the complete game effort.
Fitchburg State (3-0-0, 1-0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to Salem State at 2 p.m. Framingham State (0-3-0, 0-2-0 MASCAC) will host Worcester State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
