Westfield State Explodes in Third to Defeat Ice Hockey 9-5

Framingham, Mass. - The Westfield State College ice hockey team exploded for five goals in the third period to defeat the Framingham State Rams 9-5 in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) ice hockey action today at Framingham's Loring Arena.

Sophomore forward A.J. Shiverdecker (Kettering, OH) and freshman forward Danny Kaufman (Scotch Plains, NJ) each tallied two goals and an assist in the game for three points apiece for the Owls (11-7-2).  Senior Casey Mignone (Ramsey, NJ) scored two goals while Scott Soborowski (Novi, MI) and Jason Nelson (Raleigh, NC) chipped in two assists each.

The Rams (1-16-2) were led by senior Jeremy Schmidt (Huffman, TX) who also tallied three points with a goal and two assists in the game, while Matt Lally (Natick, Mass.) and Joe Hurley (Charlestown, Mass.) added a goal and an assist apiece.

With the game tied at 3-3 at 16:29 of the second period, Shiverdecker put the Owls ahead for good with his first goal of the game with just under three minutes to play in the period.

Shiverdecker extended the Owls lead to two goals just three minutes into the third period with his second of the game and fifth of the season.

Schmidt pulled the Rams pack within one at 5-4 at 7:37 of the third, but in the next two minutes the Owls would add two goals to push their lead to 7-4. 

Hurley brought the Rams back within two with a power play goal with just over eight minutes remaining in the game, but less than two minutes later Jeff Callahan (Londonderry, NH), who racked up a goal and an assist in the game, scored to put the Owls back up by two.  Brad Norkum (Porcupine, ON) scored an empty net goal for the Owls with just three seconds remaining to reach the final score.

Junior Ray Monroe (Shrewsbury, Mass.) made 36 saves for the Owls and picked up the win.

The Rams return to action on Thursday as they host Fitchburg State at 7:20 p.m.
