Ice Hockey Falls to Tufts, 4-3

Malden, MA -- Tufts University sophomore Tom Derosa (Charlestown, MA) had two goals and an assist in the second period that led to a 4-3 victory against Framingham State College in non-conference men's hockey action on Tuesday night at Valley Forum II.

After falling behind 1-0, the Jumbos scored four times in the second period and then held on while the Rams came charging back in the third. Freshman Nick Resor (Westwood, MA), Derosa's linemate, had a goal and two assists for the Jumbos, who improved to 4-3 overall. Junior goalie Jay McNamara (Weston, MA) made his first start of the season for Tufts and earned the win with 27 saves. Junior co-captain Jeremy Schmidt (Huffman, TX) scored a goal and an assist for Framingham (0-7-2), which got a strong performance in goal from junior Andy Joyce (Milford, MA) with 37 saves.

The teams played a scoreless first period, with Joyce stopping 11 shots and McNamara 10. The Rams were the first team on the scoreboard just 1:31 into the second period when senior Sean Maguire (Plymouth, MA) jammed home a rebound for his third goal of the year.  Schmidt assisted on Maguire's tally.

Tufts controlled the remainder of the middle period as they added four unanswered goals and finished with a 20-7 advantage in shots in the frame. Junior Joe Rosano (Cohasset, MA) evened the game at 1-1 with his first goal of the season at 5:20. Derosa's first of the game at 7:40 gave Tufts the lead for good at 2-1. He added his second of the game and fifth of the season at 11:44 for a 3-1 Jumbo margin. Resor had assists on both of Derosa's goals. Just eight seconds after the third Tufts goal, Resor netted his fifth of the season to push the lead to 4-1.

The Jumbos would end up needing all of those goals, as Framingham played an inspired third period. They pulled within 4-2 on a goal by junior Joe Hurley (Charlestown, MA) at 4:09. The Rams continued to hold a slight edge in play for the third and pulled within a goal at 18:46 of the third on Schmidt's tally. Joyce came off the ice for an extra attacker during the final 58 seconds, but to no avail.

Tufts finished with a 41-30 advantage in shots. The game featured just three penalties, with two whistled against Framingham and one for Tufts.
