Ice Hockey Opens Season with 10-2 Set Back at Hobart

Geneva, NY - The eighth-ranked Hobart College hockey team downed Framingham State tonight 10-2 at The Cooler. The Statesmen improve to 4-2-0 overall, while the Rams move to 0-1-0 on the season. This is the first time Hobart has notched 10 goals in a game since 2006, when the Statesmen scored 10 in a win over Lebanon Valley.

Hobart jumped out to an early lead, netting five goals before the first period was over. Sophomore Pat Moriarty (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) started the scoring 6:14 into the game on a power play. He was assisted by classmate Tom Capalbo (Mamaroneck, N.Y.). Immediately following that tally was another from sophomore Alex Contis (Celabasas, Calif.) at 6:33, set up by sophomore Jeremy Dwyer (Ridgefield, Conn.) and senior Kirk Golden (Vail, Colo.).

The Rams got on the board in the 13th minute, as Joseph Hurley (Charlestown, MA) connected on a pass from Jason Anderson (Arden Hills, MN). The Statesmen answered, however, with three more goals from first-year Anthony Scarpino (Meadville, Pa.), sophomore Gregory Alberti (Bernardsville, N.J.), and senior Michael Steiner (Shaker Heights, Ohio).

At 2:05 in the second stanza, Dwyer broke away for his first career goal to put Hobart up 6-1. Power play goals by Golden and sophomore Alex Chissler (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), and a shorthanded tally from Moriarty, gave the Statesmen a 9-1 advantage heading into the final break.

First-year Nick Stefanelli (Hampstead, N.H.) recorded his first collegiate score in the 14th minute of the third period, assisted by Scarpino and first-year Greg Ciciola (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.).

Framingham State lit the lamp once more, on a power play goal from Hurley in the 19th minute. Anderson and Brian Lawson (Royal Oak, MI) picked up the helpers.

Hobart first-year goaltenders Colin Saltiel (Melford, N.J.) and Terje Larsson (Nynashamn, Sweden) split time in net. Saltiel collected five saves and the win, while Larsson finished with 11 stops. Goalies Ryan Shelley (Gray, ME) and Andy Joyce (Milford, MA) combined for 40 saves for the Rams.
