Gould Leads Men's Basketball to Overtime Victory over Rosemont

Baltimore, MD – Junior Daniel Gould (Quincy, Mass.) was selected to the All-Tournament team at the Blue Jays Invitational as the Rams defeated Rosemont College 71-68 in overtime in the tournament's consolation game.

With the win, the Rams improve to 3-8 on the year, while Rosemont falls to 5-6.

Gould tallied 17 points including four threes en route to earning All-Tournament honors.  Senior Tim McCarthy (Wilmington, Mass.) led the Rams with a game-high 18 points, while classmate Jacek Louisville (Worcester, Mass.) added 14 and six rebounds.  Sophomore Tony Alexandre (Hyde Park, Mass.) notched a double double with 11 points and a game-best 16 rebounds.

Rosemont was led by 26 points from Kyle Lafferty who was also selected to the All-Tournament team.  Lafferty connected on 9-of-17 from the field to go along with three boards.  Marcus Thomas was the only other Rosemont player to reach double figures as he scored 22.

The Rams shooting from behind the arc was the difference in the game as they shot 42% from behind the arc (8-of-19) in the game, while the Ravens did not hit a single shot from long range going 0-for-12 in the contest.

Tied at 15-15 just under eight minutes into the game, the Rams rattled off a 10-2 run over the next eight minutes to take a 25-17 lead on a Louisville bucket in the paint.  The Ravens closed the half with a run of their own, 7-2, to head into the locker room only trailing by three (27-24).

The Rams maintained the lead until the seven minute mark of the second half when a three point play from Lafferty tied the game at 41-41. A 6-0 run started by a Tim Mangano (Winchester, Mass.) jumper put the Rams back on top 47-41 with just under four remaining.  Lafferty pulled the Ravens within one, but a pair of McCarthy freebies with 1:08 remaining pushed the Rams lead back to three. The Rams defense forced a turnover and McCarthy hit one of two to push the lead to four.  Lafferty cut the deficit in half with 31 seconds remaining.  Two Gould free throws pushed the lead back to four, by Thomas hit a pair to cut the deficit back to two with 22 seconds left.  The Rams turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and a Lafferty layup tied the game and forced overtime.

In the extra session, the Rams trailed by one with 3:50 remaining in the OT but the Rams rattled off seven straight points including a three by Gould to take a 61-55 lead.  A Lafferty jumper cut into the lead, but another Gould three pushed the lead back to seven.  Rosemont pulled within three with under a minute remaining on a Jamier Hughes jumper, but Gould answered with a jumper of his own.  Rosemont was forced to foul and the Rams went 4-for-4 from the line in the final 21 seconds to seal the win.

The Rams are back in action on Wednesday when they open conference play at Salem State with tipoff slated for 7:30 p.m.
