Men’s Basketball Shoots Past Newbury in Home Opener

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University men's basketball team broke into the win column with a 71-53 victory over Newbury College in non-conference action this evening at the Athletic Center.

With the win, the Rams are now 1-2 on the young season, while the Nighthawks dip to 0-2.

Tied at 8-8 early in the game, the Rams rattled off a 13-3 run fueled by three threes from senior Tim McCarthy (Wilmington, Mass.) to take a 21-11 advantage.  The Nighthawks chipped away at the Rams lead closing to within five (34-29) at the break thanks to 12 first half points from sophomore Jeduan Langston (Boston, Mass.).

The Rams opened the second half with a quick spurt taking a 45-29 lead on a layup from sophomore Tony Alexandre (Hyde Park, Mass.).  The Nighthawks pulled to within 11 on a layup from Marketh Biscoe (Leander, Texas) with 12 minutes remaining in the game and again on a basket from Langston with 6:51 remaining, but the Rams rattled off an 8-0 run highlighted by threes from junior Daniel Gould (Quincy, Mass.) and senior Joe McCabe (Canton, Mass.) to put the game out of reach.

McCarthy led all scorers with a game-high 23 points on 6-of-10 shooting from behind the arc to go along with five rebounds and two assists.  Alexandre barely missed a double double with 16 points and eight boards, while senior Jacek Louisville (Worcester, Mass.) filled the stat sheet with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.

The Nighthawks were led by 15 points and 13 boards from Kenny Ramos, while Langston finished with 14 on 5-of-13 shooting from the field.  Biscoe added 11 points, while John Ashford (Chicago, Ill.) was a force on the boards hauling in a game-best 12.

The Rams are back in action at home on Thursday night when they host Plymouth State at 6 p.m., while the Nighthawks participate in the Connecticut College Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
