Men’s Basketball Coach Don Spellman Resigns
Framingham, Mass. — Framingham State College men’s basketball coach Don Spellman has resigned his position effective immediately. Spellman has been a part of the Framingham State men’s basketball program for 13 years serving as head coach for the past nine seasons from 2001-2010 and as an assistant for four years from 1999-2001.
During Spellman’s tenure the Rams reached the finals of the MASCAC Tournament three times in 2002, 2005 and 2010 and received back-to-back bids to the ECAC New England Tournament in 2009 and 2010. In 2005, Spellman was named the MASCAC Coach of the Year as the Rams finished second in the MASCAC and posted their best record since 1991 making their second appearance in the conference finals under Coach Spellman.
Spellman leaves the Rams with a 104-122 record and is one of only two men’s basketball coaches to record over 100 wins with the Rams. Spellman reached the 100 win milestone on February 9th, 2010 as the Rams defeated Salem State 73-70. The Rams finished the 2009-2010 season 16-11 overall and 9-3 in the conference. The Rams were the second seed in the MASCAC Tournament and were defeated in the championship game of the tournament in overtime by Bridgewater State.
Coach Spellman’s teams were always known for their tenacity on defense and their toughness. In 2004-2005 the Rams finished the season ranked first in the northeast region and tenth in the nation in field goal percentage defense. In addition, the Rams have traditionally played one of the most difficult schedules in the region. In 2008-2009 the Rams played 11 games against teams that qualified for the NCAA tournament and eight of those games were against teams that reached the Sweet 16.
“I am grateful to the administration for allowing me the opportunity to coach at Framingham State,” said Spellman. “The relationships I have made with the student-athletes and coaching staff at the College will be treasured forever.”
Spellman leaves to pursue other coaching opportunities and the search for the next Framingham State College men’s basketball coach will begin.
