Carey Leads Men's Basketball Past Westfield State

Westfield, Mass. - Senior guard Bill Carey (Abington, Mass.) scored a team-high 11 points and senior Josue Almodovar (Holyoke, Mass.) added 10 points and seven rebounds to lead Framingham State to a 59-46 victory over Westfield State on Tuesday, Feb. 16 in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's basketball action.

Framingham State, 14-9 overall, is in sole possession of second place in the MASCAC with a 9-3 conference record. Westfield State drops to 9-15 overall and 2-9 in the MASCAC with the loss.

The Owls only shot 28 percent from the field, but they went on a 13-2 first-half run to take an 18-17 lead, capped by a steal and a layup from junior forward Jesse Benoit (Granby, Mass).

Framingham outscored Westfield 9-2 over the final 5:31 to take a 26-20 halftime lead.

Leading by six, 31-25, with 16:30 remaining in the game, Framingham State put together a 15-4 scoring spurt to take its biggest lead of the game, 46-29, at the 11:15 mark.

The Rams shot 42 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Owls, 46-33 in the contest. Also scoring in double figures for the winners was junior guard Royce Veal (Dorchester, Mass.) with 10 points. Junior forward Brendan Carter (South Boston, Mass.) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Senior forward Asa Abbott (New Paltz, NY) was Westfield's only player in double figures as he scored a game-high 14 points in his home finale.

The Rams close out the regular season on Saturday at Babson College at 4 p.m.
