Men's Basketball Falls Short Against UMass Dartmouth

Framingham, MA - The Framingham State College men's basketball team began the second half of their season today at home with a 79-63 loss to the visiting Cosairs of UMass Dartmouth.  With the win, the Cosairs remain unbeaten on the season at 10-0, while the Rams fall to 4-7.

After Framingham State took a 16-15 lead over the Cosairs with 13:04 remaining in the opening, the Cosairs took the lead for good on a layup by sophomore forward Matt Walker (Brockton, MA) with 11:10 remaining and closed the half on a 31-18 run to open up a 46-34 half time lead.  Senior guard A.J. Tavares (New Bedford, MA) led the Cosairs with 15 first half points including 3 of 5 from behind the arc.

The Rams were able to cut the deficit to five on a three pointer by Michael Costa (Holbrook, MA) with 17:37 remaining in the second half.  The Cosairs responded with a 10-4 run to open up an 11 point lead with 13:41 remaining.  The Cosairs would extend the lead to as many as 16 points in the final few minutes as they held on for the win.

Tavares finished the day with a game-high 19 points, while Cory Tynes (Springfield, MA), Brandon Stephens (Dorchester, MA) and Walker chipped in 11 points apiece.  Senior center Dan Holbrook (Lexington, MA) added a game-high 19 boards and eight points.      

Sophomore Josue Almodovar (Holyoke, MA) led the Rams with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Costa chipped in 14 points and four assists.  Freshman Royce Veal (Dorchester, MA) and senior center Rob Scarpato (Hopkinton, MA) chipped in 12 points apiece.

The Framingham State Rams return to action on Tuesday January 8th, 2008 as they host Curry College at 6 p.m., while the UMass Dartmouth Cosairs travel to Salem State on the 8th for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
