Field Hockey Drops Heartbreaker in Overtime to Westfield

Framingham, Mass. Westfield State's Emily Martin tied the game in the final minute of regulation then scored the game-winner in overtime to send the Owls over Framingham State 2-1 in LEC action Wednesday night.  

THE BASICS: 

- Score: Westfield State 2, Framingham State 1 (OT) 

- Records: Framingham State (8-7, 4-6 LEC), Westfield State (9-6. 6-3 LEC) 

- Location: Maple Street Field – Framingham, Mass. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • About six minutes in the Rams had a great look on a corner but Corlene Guenard's shot beat the goalie but hit the post and was deflected out of harms way.  

  • The Rams got on the board in the final minute of the half when a Rams corner attempt was settled by Corlene Guenard who sent in a long strike from the top of the arc that was tipped inside the left post by Kennedy St. Pierre.  

  • The Owls came out of the break firing, but Rams keeper Kaitlin Loughlin turned away multiple attempts to keep Westfield off the board.  

  • Westfield kept up the attack throughout the half and finally broke through with just over a minute to play when Emily MArtin sent one into the cage after a setup from Kaleigh Murphy.  

  • In the overtime period the Owls had a player on a breakaway that was cleared by a crashing Loughlin and eventually cleared out of the arc.  

  • In the 70th minute the Skyla Harthcock sent in a cross that was tipped by Martin, deflected off Louglin and a Rams defender and snuck inside the left post for the game winner. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • The Rams outshot the Owls by a slim 11-to-10 margin after the Rams did not allow a shot in the first half.  

  • Emma Gniadek made five saves in the win for the Rams.  

  • Louglin was the tough luck loser after making seven stops.  

  • The hosts also led 10-to-7 in penalty corners.  

 

UP NEXT: 

  • The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Eastern Connecticut for Little East action. The Owls will host Castleton in LEC play Saturday evening.
