Field Hockey Edged by Worcester State

Framingham, Mass. The Framingham State field hockey team was defeated by Worcester State in Little East Conference action Saturday afternoon in Worcester.  

THE BASICS: 

- Score: Worcester State 3, Framingham State 1 

- Records:Framingham State (5-4, 1-3 LEC), Worcester State (6-3, 3-0 LEC) 

- Location: Coughlin Field – Worcester, Mass.  

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Just five minutes into the first quarter saw a scrum in front of the cage that resulted in a stroke call in favor of Framingham. Angelina Serra stepped up to the stroke and launched the ball to the top left corner to put the Rams up 1-0 early in the game.  

  • Worcester State answered just under six minutes later after peppering Framingham goalie Kaitlin Loughlin, junior Zoe Athanasopoulus nabbed the ball off the goalkeepers' pads and sent it careening off the backboard.  

  • The 1-1 tie carried into the second quarter until junior Grace Adams received a pass across the middle from sophomore Madison Avilla to put the go-ahead goal past the defense. 

  • The game remained at 2-1 for a majority of the second half even as the Lancers worked to extend their lead.  

  • In the 48' minute an insurance goal was scored when senior Molly Cutting received a pass from the right off the stick of senior Karalyn Jones to put the Lancers up 3-1.  

  • Framingham attempted a late fourth quarter surge to close the gap, but Worcester State held strong and closed out the victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Athanasopoulus led the Lancers with seven shots and a goal on the afternoon while sophomore Madison Ferrara ) made five saves in the game. 

  • Loughlin made 11 saves in net for the Rams. 

  • Worcester outshot the visitors 23-to-9 and had 7 corners to the Rams 2.
