Field Hockey Blanks Becker 1-0 For First Victory

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University field hockey team broke into the win column this afternoon with a 1-0 shutout victory over Becker College in non-conference action at Maple Street Field.

With the win, the Rams are now 1-7 on the year, while the Hawks slip to 1-10.

The Rams had an opportunity to strike first when they were awarded a penalty stroke 14 minutes into the game.  Senior Samantha Pajer (Leicester, Mass.) took the stroke for the Rams and lifted a shot at the cage, but senior Gabrielle Gallo (Northport, NY) came up with a diving save for the Hawks keeping the game scoreless.

The Rams grabbed the lead in the 15th minute when freshman Hannah Carnes (Taunton, Mass.) knocked home a pass from sophomore Amie Souza (Taunton, Mass.) in the circle for her third marker of the season.

The goal by Carnes would prove to be the game winner as senior Rosemary Talbot (Whitinsville, Mass.) held the Hawks off the board recording her first shutout of the season.  Becker's best chance at the equalizer came with just over 20 minutes showing on the clock.  Sophomore Amy Grenier (Westminster, Mass.) took a pass at the top of the circle and fired a shot that Talbot was able to block.

The Rams outshot the Hawks 23-13 in the game as both teams attempted 10 penalty corners. Talbot finished the game making four saves, while Gallo recorded 16 for the visitors.

The Rams are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Salem State for a Little East Conference game beginning at 12 p.m., while the Hawks square off with Bay Path on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
