Westfield, Mass. – The Westfield State University field hockey team defeated Framingham State University 2-0 in Little East Conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Owls started off the game with a goal by senior Kelly Kenney (Suffield, Mass.) just 4:37 into the game. Kenny scored off of a rebound as the result of a corner opportunity. The remainder of the first half was scoreless.
Seven minutes into the second half Holly Brouillette (Burlington, Mass.) also capitalized off of a corner opportunity with a goal assisted by Kelsey Carpenter ( Barre, Mass.).
Carpenter's defensive play was also a key for the Owls in holding the Rams off the scoreboard.
Westfield goalie Alanah Melanson (Chelmsford, Mass.) is credited with the shut thanks to a couple of crucial saves including a play where she ran and slid out of the net to stop a shot in the second half.
Framingham goalie Rosemary Talbot (Whitinsville, Mass.) made seven saves in the loss.
The Rams record is now 6-7 overall and 2-5 in the Little East. The Rams next game is in Framingham on October 16th when they play Lasell in a non-conference contest.
The Owls improve to 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the Little East Conference. They travel next Tuesday October 14th to play Smith College.
