Field Hockey Blanked by Eastern Connecticut
Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University field hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss to Eastern Connecticut State University this afternoon in Little East Conference field hockey action at Maple Street Field.
With the victory, the Warriors improve to 5-4 on the year and 2-1 in the conference, while the Rams slip to 5-3 overall and are still in search of their first Little East victory at 0-3.
The Warriors wasted no time getting on the scoreboard and grabbing the early lead. Just 1:08 into the contest senior Finley Ahern (Wallingford, Conn.) fed sophomore Hannah Keiser (Danbury, Conn.) at the top of the circle on a penalty corner. Keiser fired a shot that found the back of the cage for the 1-0 advantage.
Framingham's offense came alive late in the half as they outshot the Warriors 8-1 in the frame. With just over eight minutes on the clock, senior Brittany Goben (New Bedford, Mass.) blasted a shot from the top of the circle off an insertion on a penalty corner. Goben's shot was saved by the Warrior net minder, but senior Cassandra Koegel (Groveland, Mass.) was there for the rebound and one timed a shot that Samantha Scavo (Redding, Conn.) stopped with a sprawling save.
Eastern Connecticut maintained the goal advantage until the 40th minute when they tacked on an insurance marker. Keiser sent a shot on net that FSU's Sarah Palace (Auburn, Mass.) was able to kick away, but freshman MaryKate Custer (South Windsor, Conn.) was right there to gather the loose ball and knock it home for her second goal of the season.
The Rams had one final scoring chance down the stretch as sophomore Cady Kelly (Canton, Mass.) carried the ball through the Warrior defense and into the circle. Kelly was able to get a good shot off on net, but Scavo came up with the save once again.
The Warriors outshot the Rams 12-11 in the game and held a slim 8-6 edge in penalty corners. Scavo recorded her third shutout victory of the season making nine stops, while Palace finished with eight, all in the second half.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel Little East Conference foe Western Connecticut State at 7 p.m., while the Warriors also resume Little East action on Tuesday when they host Fitchburg State at 4 p.m.
