Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University field hockey team tallied a pair of first half goals as they defeated Roger Williams University 2-0 in non-conference action this afternoon at Maple Street Field.

With the victory the Rams improve their season mark to 5-2, while the Hawks slip to 2-5 with the loss.

Framingham State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute as they capitalized on one of their nine first half penalty corners.  Senior Cassandra Koegel (Groveland, Mass.) inserted the ball to senior Kaitlyn Ranieri (Bellingham, Mass.) at the top of the circle.  Ranieri eluded a defender and blasted a shot into the back of the cage.

Roger Williams countered with a pair of scoring chances off a pair of corners.  Freshman Katherine Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn.) had the Hawks first crack with a blast from the left side off a corner that FSU goalie Sarah Palace (Auburn, Mass.) saved and deflected out of the circle.  Two minutes later, freshman Meghan Curran (West Milford, NJ) had a chance off another corner with Palace out of position, but Curran's bid rolled wide.

The Rams extended their lead to 2-0 with just under three minutes left in the half as junior Hannah Wilkins (Merrimac, Mass.) knocked home a loose ball in the circle.

Neither team would find the back of the cage in the second half as the Hawks outshot the Rams 9-3 in the frame and held and an 8-3 edge in second stanza corners.  Palace, who made 10 saves in the game, was solid in the half turning away seven shots en route to recording her first shutout victory of the season between the pipes.

Both teams took 14 shots in the game, while the Rams held a slim 12-11 edge in penalty corners.  Melora Lavoie (Poland, ME) suffered the loss in goal for the visitors making seven stops and surrendering two goals.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Little East Conference foe Eastern Connecticut State at 2 p.m., while the Hawks resume C.C.C action on October 2nd at Western New England at 7 p.m.
