Chicopee, Mass. – Framingham State University junior forward Cassandra Koegel (Groveland, Mass.) scored what stood as the game-winner in the 41st minute of action to lift the Rams to a 1-0 victory over the Blazers of Elms College this afternoon in a non-conference field hockey game at Leary Field.

With the victory the Rams improve to 8-5 overall, while the loss drops Elms to 4-9.

Elms College senior goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) notched 17 saves and kept the Blazers in the game all afternoon despite being outshot 24-2 by the Rams in the game.

After a scoreless first half of action that saw Framingham State outshoot Elms, 10-1, the Rams scored early in the second period as Koegel played the ball into the net following a nice touch from Alina Willing (Natick, Mass.) to give Framingham State a 1-0 lead.

That was all the Rams needed as senior goalkeeper Sarah Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.) fended off both shots by Elms' junior forward Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.) who registered the Blazers' only two shots on target to record her sixth shutout victory of the season.

Bonavita, meanwhile was superb between the pipes, turning away 17 of the 19 shots on goal that she faced. Elms' sophomore defender Allie LaMonica (Salem, Mass.)added a defensive save in the losing effort.

Elms returns to Leary Field and New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Saturday, Oct. 13 when it hosts Anna Maria College at 3 p.m., while the Rams entertain Little East foe Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
