Westfield, Mass. – Senior co-captain Lauren Tavares scored a first-half goal to lift Westfield State University to a 1-0 victory over Framingham State University in Little East Conference (LEC) field hockey action this afternoon.
Westfield improves its record to 4-3 in the Little East Conference and 7-4 overall, while Framingham is now 7-5 overall and 2-5 in the conference.
Tavares scored in the 25th minute off a penalty corner with assists from junior back Courtney Araujo and Liz Hall. Hall, a senior co-captain from nearby Southwick, ranks fifth nationally with 11 assists.
Westfield outshot Framingham, 14-12, but the Owls were edged in penalty corners, 10-9 by the Rams.
Owl goalie Khrystyna Mitchell recorded the shutout with five saves and Framingham net minder senior Sarah Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.) made six stops.
The Rams return to action on Thursday afternoon with a non-conference game at Elms College at 4 p.m.
