Field Hockey Defeats Fitchburg State 2-1

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Framingham State University field hockey team defeated Fitchburg State University, 2-1 in Little East Conference action this morning at Elliot Field.

In the opening stanza, Framingham State opened the scoring in the 10th minute as senior forward Cali Tetreault (New Bedford, Mass.) redirected a shot off the stick of sophomore Emma Littlefield (Rockport, Mass.) and tucked the ball inside the near post for the 1-0 advantage.

Fitchburg State quickly knotted the score (1-1) less than a minute later when senior Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass.) notched her team leading ninth marker of the season. Kelley intercepted a pass and beat Rams goalie Sarah Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.) to the right side.

In the second half, the Rams regained the lead in the 40th minute of action as junior Brittany Goben (Fairhaven, Mass.) blasted a shot from the left side for the 2-1 margin. Classmate Cassandra Koegel (Groveland, Mass.) assisted on the play.

The Falcons looked to tie the score with just under 23 minutes remaining in regulation when Kelley streaked down the middle of the field and created a break away opportunity, but Ryan was able to make the save to preserve the victory for Framingham State.

Throughout the match, Fitchburg State out shot Framingham State 15-7, while the Rams held a 6-4 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, sophomore Lucy Holewa (Londonderry, N.H.) posted three stops for the Falcons, while Ryan finished with seven saves for the Rams.

Fitchburg State (5-4, 2-3 LEC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to Westfield State University at 7 p.m. Framingham State (6-3, 2-3 LEC) will host Bridgewater State University on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
