Field Hockey Falls to Western Connecticut 2-0

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University field hockey team was defeated at home this afternoon 2-0 by Western Connecticut State University in Little East Conference (LEC) action at Maple Street Field.     

The win was the Colonials first conference victory of the season as they are now 1-3 in the league and 3-5 overall, while the Rams fall to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Western Connecticut struck first just over 13 minutes into the game.  Junior forward Shelly Davies (Newtown, Mass.) fired a shot inside the circle that deflected off a Ram defender and over the goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.

The Rams outshot the Colonials 6-4 in the first half, but were unable to tie the score as junior goalkeeper Courtney Hearn (New Fairfield, Conn.) made five saves to preserve the one goal lead.

The Colonials extended their lead early in the second half.  The visitors were awarded a penalty stroke after a shot was misplayed by a Ram defender in front of the goal.  Senior Nicole Andreasen (New Fairfield, Conn.) took the stroke and found the back of the cage for the 2-0 lead at 42:40 to reach the final differential.

Western Connecticut outshot the Rams 14-9 in the game including a 10-3 edge in the second half.  The Rams had the advantage in penalty corners with 11 to the Colonials nine but the hosts could not capitalize on the opportunities.

Hearn recorded the shutout in the cage for Western Connecticut making six saves, while senior Sarah Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.) made eight stops and suffered the loss for the Rams.

Both teams continue league play on Saturday with the Rams traveling to Fitchburg State at 10 a.m. and the Colonials hosting Keene State at 5 p.m.
