Field Hockey Falls at Bridgewater State

Field Hockey Falls at Bridgewater State

Bridgewater, Mass. – Behind a balanced offensive attack, the Bridgewater State University Bears downed visiting Framingham State University, 4-1, in Little East Conference field hockey action on Tuesday night at Swenson Field.

The host Bears, winners of seven straight games, improve to 8-3 on the season and 4-2 in the Little East, while the Rams slip to 3-8 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

Senior forward Breanna Clement (Pittsfield, Mass.), junior midfielder Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) and junior forward Beth Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) each notched a goal and an assist for the Bears.

Framingham freshman defender Emma Littlefield (Rockport, Mass.) gave the visiting Rams an early 1-0 lead scoring on a one-time shot in the 17th minute off a feed from classmate Rhea Urbaniak (Chelmsford, Mass.).

Just under ten minutes later BSU senior midfielder Stephanie Lannon (Swampscott, Mass.) notched the equalizing goal knocking home a rebound off a Megan Cullinane (Lunenburg, Mass.) shot.

With the score tied 1-1 in the opening stages of the second half, Farland put the Bears out in front to stay as she scored off a penalty corner in the 40th minute with Phillips picking up the assist. Farland lifted a high wrist shot that sailed over the Framingham keeper and dropped into the back right corner of the net for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Phillips put the Bears up 3-1 in the 49th minute as she scored off a pass that was redirected by Clement.  Clement tallied her sixth goal of the season to cap off the scoring in the 67th minute, one-timing a short pass from Farland from directly in front of the net.

Bridgewater held a 13-6 shot advantage for the game as well as a 9-6 edge in penalty corners.

BSU junior goaltender Cassie Johansen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) turned aside four shots to pick up her eighth win of the season.  Framingham junior Sarah Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.) made five saves between the pipes for the Rams.

Bridgewater will travel to Western Connecticut State University on Saturday for a four o'clock Little East game with the Colonials.  Framingham entertains Westfield State University on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
