Field Hockey Falls at Western Connecticut 3-1

Danbury, Conn. -  The Western Connecticut State University field hockey team broke open a 0-0 tie with three second-half goals to claim a 3-1 victory over Little East Conference rival Framingham State Wednesday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.

During the first 35 minutes of play, defense and goaltending dominated the action, as neither team was able to break the scoreless tie.  Both teams generated three shots on offense, and similarly each had three penalty corner chances, but the score remained 0-0 at intermission.

After nearly 45 minutes of scoreless play, senior Lauren Atkinson (Southbury, CT) scored back-to-back goals for WestConn in just over two minutes.  The first came when Atkinson took a shot from the left side that bounced hard off the goalie's pads and right back to Atkinson.  The second attempt found the back of the net and gave WestConn the game's first goal.

A little more than two minutes later, Atkinson took a penalty corner and moved the ball outside the arc to sophomore Rachel Duffy (Marlton, NJ).  Duffy quickly returned the ball Atkinson who took the ball between the legs of a Framingham State defender and beat the keeper with a cross-cage shot for a 2-0 WestConn lead.  With 12 minutes remaining, sophomore Kim Gigante (Bedford Hills, NY) added an insurance goal for the Colonials off an assist by junior Leandra Zaklukiewicz (Little Falls, NY).

Framingham State's Elizabeth Morrison (Taunton, Mass.) finally got the Rams on the board with four minutes remaining when she took a pass from Demi Miskiv (Centerville, Mass.) and beat WestConn keeper Courtney Hearn (New Fairfield, CT) who had just entered the game in goal, making WestConn's final margin of victory 3-1.

For the game, WestConn held a 10-5 advantage in shots, and a 6-3 edge in penalty corners.  WestConn's starting keeper, Alyssa Picariello (Montrose, NY), recorded two saves to earn the win, while Sarah Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.) made four saves in a losing effort for Framingham State.

With the win, WestConn's season record now stands at 7-2, and 3-1 in the Little East Conference.  Framingham State falls to 3-6, 1-3 in the LEC.

The Colonials return to action on Saturday, October 1st, when they travel to play Little East Conference rival Keene State at 1:30 p.m., while the Rams host Fitchburg State at 2 p.m.
