Koegel Leads Field Hockey to 2-0 Win Over Wheelock

Boston, Mass. Sophomore midfielder Cassandra Koegel (Groveland, Mass.) came off the bench to net a pair of goals to provide all the offense the Framingham State University field hockey team would need in a 2-0 victory over host Wheelock College this evening at Winsor Field in Boston.  The Rams improve to 2-5 on the season with the victory and snap a five game losing streak, while the Wildcats fall to 1-7.

Following a scoreless first half, Framingham sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Ranieri (Bellingham, Mass.) dribbled into the box on the right side and crossed to the front of the cage to find a streaking Koegel for a one-timer and the first goal of the night at 43:19 of the second half.

The Rams looked to increase their lead just three minutes later on a penalty stroke by Ranieri, but sophomore goalie Michelle Greene (Mansfield, MA) came up big for Wheelock, stopping the free shot to keep the deficit at 1-0.

Koegel's second tally of the night and the season came at the 60:41 mark for Framingham when she fired a shot from the mid-left circle that ricocheted off a Wildcats defender, who was crashing the goal, and into the back of the cage for a 2-0 margin.

Wheelock looked to capitalize on a chance to score, later in the first half, when junior midfielder Rachel Robohm's (North Easton, Mass.) shot came off the Rams goalie and onto the stick of junior midfielder Chelsey Ballard (Mansfield, Mass.).  Ballard wasted no time with a shot of her own, but sophomore defender Kelli Timmins (Dedham, Mass.) made a defensive save for Framingham to keep the match scoreless at the time.

Junior keeper Sarah Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.) earned the shutout with one save for the Rams, while Greene finished the evening with five stops for the Wildcats.

Framingham State will be in action again on Saturday, September 24th when it hosts Eastern Connecticut State University in a conference match at 4 p.m., while Wheelock hosts Kean University on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Winsor Field.
