Field Hockey Falls to UNE 3-0
Biddeford, Maine - Senior
co-captain Michaela Franey (York, Maine) tallied a goal in each
half to help power the University of New England Nor'easters to a
3-0 shutout of the Framingham State University Rams in a
non-conference field hockey match played in front of an estimated
crowd of 500 at the Big Blue Turf on Wednesday evening.
UNE (2-1) controlled play virtually the entire evening, taking a
17-3 advantage in shots and holding the Rams without an attempt
until 5:41 remained in the contest.
First-year forward Casey Clark (Franconia, N.H.) got the
Nor'easters on the scoreboard 18:28 into the game when her shot
from just inside the circle deflected off Framingham State goalie
Allesha Kenyon (Westford, Mass.) into the cage.
Franey notched her first marker of the evening just over 10 minutes
later, converting a rebound off a save by Kenyon.
The Nor'easters would lead 2-0 at the break after establishing an
11-0 cushion in shots.
Franey gave Big Blue some additional breathing room at the 63:05
mark when she drove home a centering pass from Clark.
Senior goalkeeper Ayla Nelson (Auburn, Mass.) needed just one save
to record her 10th career shutout, breaking the school record she
previously shared with Krystal Wysocki.
Kenyon registered 10 stops for the Rams (0-2), who will be seeking
their first win Saturday when they host the University of Southern
Maine in a Little East Conference tilt at 1 p.m.
UNE will open up The Commonwealth Coast Conference play that same
afternoon when New England College comes to Biddeford for a noon
start.
