Field Hockey Falls to Salve Regina in Season Opener

Box Score

Newport, R.I. - The Framingham State College field hockey team opened up the 2009 season today under the direction of first year coach Meghan Daly at Salve Regina University and were defeated 2-0.  Salve Regina freshman forward Kelly Burke (Georgetown, Mass.) scored her second goal in as many games to propel Salve Regina to the victory in its home opener.

Salve Regina senior co-captain Devin Eppley (Darien, Conn.) stopped three shots to pick up her first victory of the season, while Framingham State junior Allesha Kenyon (Westford, Mass.) made five stops in a losing effort.

Burke's game winning tally came after an offensive thrust from junior midfielder Ali Campagna (West Hartford, Conn.) from 12 feet out in front of the net. The Seahawks avenged a 3-1 defeat at Framingham last season while limiting the Rams to three first-half shots, all from sophomore defender Kayleigh Force (Leominster, Mass).

Andrea Michel (Yarmouth, ME) added an insurance goal for the Seahawks with six minutes remaining on a penalty corner initiated by Brittany Lopes (Lexington, Mass.). Campagna assisted on both scores.

The Rams return to action on Saturday as they host Wheelock at 11 a.m.  Salve Regina (1-1) lost its season-opener at Wheaton on Tuesday and returns to action on Saturday when they host Eastern Connecticut State at noon.
