McCarthy and Van Alstyne Selected to ECAC All-Star Team

Centerville, Mass. – Framingham State University wide receiver James McCarthy (Newton, Mass.) and running back Melikke Van Alstyne (Salem, Mass.) have been selected to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III North Region All-Star football team.  Both McCarthy and Van Alstyne were first team selections and are among 18 honorees from the New England Football Conference (NEFC).

McCarthy earns ECAC All-Star honors for the second straight season and in 2011 was previously named an NEFC Bogan Division first team selection, while Van Alstyne, who earns his first ECAC All-Star selection, continues to rack up accolades after previously being named the NEFC Bogan Division Offensive Player of the Year, first team NEFC All-Bogan Division, a D3football.com All-Star and an All-New England Selection by the New England Football Writers. 

The 5-10 senior wide receiver led the Rams in receiving in 2011 with 53 catches for 659 yards and nine touchdowns averaging 12.4 yards per reception.  McCarthy finished his outstanding career holding the FSU school records for receiving yards in a season (1,100), touchdown receptions in a game (5) and season (22), points in a season (132), touchdowns in a game (5) and touchdowns in a season (22).

The sophomore running back led the NEFC in rushing, all-purpose yards and scoring and finished the season ranked 6th in the nation in rushing, 5th in scoring, and 19th in all-purpose yards.  Van Alstyne rushed for 1,579 yards on 293 carries with 21 rushing touchdowns averaging 143.5 yards per game on the ground.  He has amassed 100 yards rushing in nine of the Rams 11 games and went over 200 yards twice.  Van Alstyne established a new FSU single season rushing mark and broke the FSU career rushing record as he now has 2,735 rushing yards in just two seasons.
