Rich Receives Boston Globe Gold Helmet Award
Framingham, MA - Framingham State College senior quarterback Bruce Rich (Chelmsford, MA) was honored as the recipient of the Boston Globe Gold Helmet Award this morning at the New England Sports Writers luncheon at Harvard's Hall of History. Rich was the Division II/III honoree and Brown's Buddy Farnham was the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) recipient. The last Ram to receive the Gold Helmet Award was Abe Bascon during the 2001 season.
Rich had an impressive day last Saturday behind center completing 22-of-29 passes (75.8%) for 361 yards and four touchdowns, including a 75-yard pass for a touchdown and the 3-yard game winning touchdown pass with eight seconds remaining in the game. Rich, who also rushed for 36 yards and two scores, led the Rams to 514 yards of total offense in a closely contested battle against MIT, 42-38, handing MIT its first loss of the season, while Framingham State improves to 2-1.
For his efforts against MIT, Rich also earned his second New England Football Conference (NEFC) Offensive Player of the Week award on Monday as well as his second Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Northeast Player of the Week award on Tuesday. Rich, who is leading the NEFC in pass efficiency and is third in passing yards per game, also received both player of the week nods previously on September 8th when he completed 17 of 27 passes for 229 yards and two TDs and rushed for 44 yards including the game winning touchdown against Endicott on a 22-yard carry in the final minute of play.
The Rams return to action on Saturday as the travel to Fitchburg State at 1:30 p.m.
