Longball Leads Baseball to Sweep of Fitchburg State

Framingham, Mass. - The Framingham State University baseball team clinched a spot in the MASCAC Baseball Tournament with a pair of victories over Fitchburg State this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Bowditch Field. In the opener, the Rams belted seven home runs as they cruised to a 14-2 victory and followed that up with a 10-5 victory in game two.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

Game 1: Framingham 14, Fitchburg 2 

  • After three scoreless innings, the Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. 

  • The Rams responded with eight runs in the bottom of the inning including four home runs with three coming back-to-back-to-back.  Lucas Basile struck first with a grand slam to center and Rosco Palmer and Massimo Mondi followed with solo homers.  Steven Burbank capped the inning with a two run shot to left. 

  • The Rams added five more in the fifth including a two run home run from Christian Cox and a solo homer for Burbank. 

  • The Falcons added a run in the top of the sixth, but Daniel Robichaud launched a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to reach the final score. 

  • Cam Prescott earned the victory on the mound going six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. PJ Moniz tossed a scoreless inning in relief. 

  • Burbank finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Basile finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and six RBI.   

Game 2: Framingham 10, Fitchburg 5 

  • In game two, the Rams took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single from Burbank, an RBI triple from JC Espinal and an RBI groundout from Dane Frellick. 

  • Fitchburg countered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning making the score 3-2. 

  • The Rams received a two-run triple off Frellick's bat pushing the lead to 5-2. 

  • The Falcons closed to within one in the bottom of the sixth, but the Rams added five insurance runs in the top of the seventh.  Espinal doubled home a run and Johnny Lynch, Mondi and Basile added RBI singles. 

  • Joshua Sunderland earned the victory on the mound going five innings, allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts. 

  • Cox and Espinal finished game two with three hits apiece, while Frellick went 2-for-3 with three RBI. 

  • Prior to the game, the Rams honored their seven seniors – Burbank, Prescott, Basile, Moniz, Robichaud, Espinal and Frellick – as part of Senior Day.
