Baseball Splits with Fitchburg to Earn MASCAC Tournament Spot

Fitchburg, Mass. - The Framingham State University baseball team split a pair of games this afternoon with Fitchburg State falling 8-7 in the opener before rallying for an 8-1 victory in game two which earned the Rams the sixth seed in next week's Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Baseball Tournament. 

 

THE BASICS: 

- Scores: Fitchburg State 8, Framingham State 7 – Framingham State 8, Fitchburg State 1 

- Records: Framingham State (11-26, 6-15), Fitchburg State (10-30, 6-15) 

- Location: Fitchburg, Mass. - Riccards Field 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

Game 1: Fitchburg State 8, Framingham State 7 

  • Fitchburg State took a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first as junior Connor Morehouse doubled to right center and scored on an RBI single to left center.  

  • The Rams knotted the score (1-1) in the top of the second when sophomore Cam Gilroy brought in junior Chris Iannetta after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  

  • The Falcons retook the lead in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly from Silas Thom. 

  • The Rams grabbed the lead back in the top of the third when Steven Burbank hit a grand slam over the left field fence for the 5-2 lead. 

  • The Falcons countered in the bottom of the frame with a sacrifice fly trimming the deficit to 5-3. 

  • The Falcons took an 8-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth after plating five runs in the frame including a two run triple from Thomas. 

  • The Rams rallied for a pair of runs in their final at bat of the game as Robert Johnston plated a run on a ground out and Ryan Boyle added a sacrifice fly. 

  • Burbank finished the game 3-for-3 for the Rams with the grand slam, two runs scored and four RBI. 

  • Anthony Panza started for the Rams and did not factor in the decision, going five innings allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts. 

Game 2 – Framingham State 8, Fitchburg State 1 

  • In game two, the Falcons grabbed the early lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning on a home run. 

  • The Rams tied the game in the top of the third on an RBI ground out from Johnston. 

  • The score stayed 1-1 until the Rams took control in the top of the sixth inning when the Rams scored six runs. 

  • Kennedy Wilson plated a run with a single to left and Chris Iannetta followed with an RBI single of his own. Ethan Moniz plated two on a double and Johnston drove in two more with his single. 

  • The Rams added a final run in the top of the seventh on an Iannetta RBI single to reach the final margin. 

  • Vincent LoGuidice earned the victory on the mound for the Rams going seven innings allowing one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts. 

  • Iannetta went 3-for-3 in the game with a run scored and two RBI, while Johnston went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI.

The Rams will be back in action next week in the MASCAC Baseball Tournament.
