Baseball Closes Southern Swing with Sweep of Westminster

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Framingham State University baseball team defeated Westminster 8-2 in the opener before tallying seven runs including a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth as the Rams completed the sweep with a 14-7 victory in game two this afternoon in non-conference action at the Polo Grounds Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

Game 1: Framingham St. 8, Westminster 2 

  • The two teams traded single runs in the second inning with Jacob Buontempo driving in a run for the Rams and Frankie Manios driving one in for Westminster. 

  • Buontempo delivered again for the Rams in the top of the fourth with an RBI single plating Kevin Girardin who had doubled to lead off the inning. Chris Iannetta followed Buontempo with an RBI double pushing the Rams lead to 3-1.  

  • Kennedy Wilson launched a solo home run in the top of the fifth extending the lead to 4-1. 

  • The Rams added four more in the top of the seventh accounting for their final runs of the game. Cam Gilroy chipped in with an RBI single and Buontempo added a two run double before Iannetta ripped an RBI double of his own. 

  • Westminster added a single run in the bottom of the frame to account for their final run of the game. 

  • Anthony Panza earned the victory on the hill for the Rams going six and a third allowing two earned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts. 

  • Sean Letarte came on in relief allowing one hit while recording the game's final two outs. 

  • Buontempo finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI, while Lucas Basile, Iannetta and Girardin recorded two hits apiece. 

Game 2:  

  • In game two, the Rams grabbed the early lead as they batted around and plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Joseph Fasolino plated the first run with a single to center and Buontempo added a two run single. Evan Kirkpatrick followed plating a pair with a double to left center. 

  • Westminster cut the deficit to two with three runs in the top of the second including a solo homer from Seth Schrader. 

  • The Rams led 7-4 after three innings before Westminster tallied single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth tying the game 7-7. 

  • The Rams responded with seven in the bottom of the inning including a grand slam from Gilroy to open up at 14-7 lead. Ryan Boyle added an RBI single and Fasolino drove in a pair with a single up the middle. 

  • Letarte retired Westminster in the seventh to earn the victory going one and two thirds allowing no runs on one hit with a pair of strikeouts. 

  • Vincent LoGuidice started on the hill for the Rams and did not factor in the decision. LoGuidice went four innings allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits. 

  • Gilroy finished the game with a pair of hits and five RBI, while Fasolino finished the game going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. 

  • Boyle finished the game with a pair of hits and RBI, while Buontempo went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI..
