Baseball Drops Non-Conference Decision to Southern Maine

Northborough, Mass. – The Framingham State University baseball team was defeated this afternoon 16-5 by the University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-conference action this afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex.     

With the win, the Huskies improve 7-4 on the year, while the loss drops the Rams to 3-8 on the season.

Southern Maine received six RBI from senior Sam Dexter (Oakland, ME) as he went 3-for-5 at the plate with two homeruns and three runs scored.  Freshman Kip Richard (Kennebunk, ME) went 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Jake Glauer chipped in with three hits and two runs scored.

The Rams were led at the plate by juniors Manny Powers (Malden, Mass.) and Ryan Wardwell (Hudson, Mass.) with both recording three hits.  Powers drove in a pair of runs, while Wardwell scored twice.

Southern Maine grabbed the lead for good in the top of the first on an RBI double from Dexter and a sacrifice fly from Richard.  Richard extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the third with an RBI single, while Dexter tacked two more on in the top of the fifth on his first homer of the game.

The Rams got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back doubles from Powers and freshman Anthony Venuti (Braintree, Mass.).  Venuti then came around with the second run on an RBI basehit from classmate Aaron Rios (Stratford, Conn.).

Southern Maine added two more in the sixth and junior Kyle Pileski (Bristol, Conn.) added a single run for the Rams in the bottom of the inning pulling the Rams within four (7-3).

Southern Maine took control of the game with six runs in the top of the seventh including a three run shot from Dexter and three more in the eighth.  The Rams tallied a pair of runs on a Powers double in the eight to account for the final runs of the game.

Jack Donnelly (Walpole, Mass.) earned the win for the Huskies on the hill going 5.2 innings and allowing three earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Senior Dillon Corliss (Winterport, ME) took the loss for the Rams going five innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts.

The Rams are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Salve Regina at 3:30 p.m., while the Huskies travel to Endicott tomorrow also at 3:30 p.m.
