Andrews Leads Baseball to 3-0 Win over Southern Maine

Gorham, Maine - Framingham State University sophomore right-hander Mike Andrews (Stoneham, Mass.) limited the University of Southern Maine to just four hits as the Rams shut out the Huskies 3-0 in a non-conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium.

Andrews was masterful giving up just four singles and one walk while striking out six for his first shutout and fifth complete game this season.  The Huskies got a runner as far as third base only once in the game, that coming in the ninth inning.  The only other inning the Huskies put together was in the sixth when the first two batters reached base, but Andrews got the next three hitters, two by way of the strikeout.

The Rams put up single runs in the first, third and fourth innings to build their lead, then left the rest to Andrews.  Senior Mark Mainini (Hull, Mass.), who had three hits in the game, played a key role in the Rams' runs in the first and third innings.  Mainini singled and took second on the throw in the first to advance senior Ivan Colon (Waltham, Mass.) to third.  Colon would score the game's first run on a ground out by senior Billy Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.).

Mainini singled with two outs in the third, moved to second on Derosier's infield single and scored on a bloop single down the right field line by senior John Gill (Hudson, Mass.).

The Rams took advantage of some Husky pitching woes to score in the fourth.  Senior Kevin Driscoll (Chelmsford, Mass.) and junior Jake Wardwell (Hudson, Mass.) had back-to-back singles with one out.  A wild pitch moved both up a base before senior Matt Gerard (Milford, Mass.) walked to load the sacks and end USM starter Zack Bean's (Westbrook, Maine) day.

Senior right-hander Andrew Richards (South Portland, Maine) came on for the Huskies and struck out the first batter he faced.  While facing Mainini, Richards uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Driscoll to score.  Richards got Mainini to prevent further damage.

Driscoll joined Mainini on the repeat hitter list for the Rams.  Senior Brendon Joyce (Standish, Maine) had two of the Huskies four hits.  Bean took his third loss of the season going 3 1/3 innings.  Richards pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings in relief giving up four hits and walking none.  Richards struck out eight.

The win was the fourth in the last five games for the Rams who improved to 23-15 overall.  The win also avenged a loss to the Huskies two weeks ago.  The Huskies had a five-game winning streak snapped by the loss and fall to 23-10 overall.

Southern Maine is off until Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) when its hosts Bates College.  Framingham State will play tomorrow (3:30 p.m.) at Keene State College.
