Baseball Takes two from Trinity to Close Southern Trip

Auburndale, Fla. – The Framingham State University baseball team took a pair of games from Trinity College on Saturday morning to close their spring training trip at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.  The Rams took the opener 5-2 before escaping with a thrilling 2-1 extra inning victory in the nightcap. 

Junior Dillon Corliss (Winterport, ME) earned the victory in the opener going 6.1 innings allowing two earned runs on five hits with a walks and three strikeouts, while Brendan McDonough (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Chris Riga (Westfield, Mass.) combined for two thirds of an inning of scoreless relief to close the game.

Junior RJ Gray (Lowell, Mass.) went 2-for-4 for the Rams with a run scored and an RBI, while freshman Jordan Pallazola (Rockport, Mass.) also recorded a pair of hits with an RBI.  Senior Mark Mainini (Hull, Mass.) scored a pair of runs for the Rams and stole three bases in the game.

In the night cap, senior Zack Kirby (Rockport, Mass.) tossed nine solid innings surrendering just one earned run on seven hits. Kirby did not earn the decision as he walked just one and struck out 10. Riga went two innings in relief and earned the victory. Riga allowed no runs on one hit with a pair of strikeouts and no walks.

Trinity took the lead with an unearned run in the top of the third, but the Rams came back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly to left by senior Ivan Colon (Waltham, Mass.).

Gray worked a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th to secure the victory for the Rams.

Senior Billy Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and classmate Matt Gerard (Milford, Mass.) each picked up two hits in the nightcap for the Rams.

The Rams are now 7-5 on the year and will resume the northern portion of their schedule on Wednesday night when they host Lesley at 7 p.m. at the NEBC in Northborough.
