Baseball Drops a Pair at Conference Leader Salem State

Salem, Mass. – The Framingham State University baseball team was swept this afternoon in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader by conference leader Salem State University.  The Vikings shutout the Rams in the opener, 5-0, before taking the second game by a score of 5-1 at the Central Campus Baseball Field.

Salem State improves to 21-11 on the year and remains undefeated in the MASCAC at 8-0. Framingham State slips to 15-13 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
 
Game 1
 
In the first game of the double header, Mike Richardson (Belmont, Mass.) pitched a complete game five-hitter to lead the Vikings to the 5-0 victory. 
 
Salem State opened up the scoring in the second. Mike Lamothe (Beverly, Mass.) hit a dribbler down the first base line to bring Brett Cahill (Gloucester, Mass.), who had singled, home to give Salem State an early 1-0 lead.
 
The Vikings plated two more when Richard Fecteau (Newbury, Mass.) hit a lead- off double to the warning track, and a Cahill single brought him home. Later, Colton Fontaine (Newburyport, Mass.) hit a swinging bunt with the bases loaded to make it 3-0 Vikings.
 
Meanwhile, Richardson stifled the Rams at the plate, scattering five hits, and three times inducing double plays to keep Framingham State off the scoreboard.  In the sixth, Alex Toomey (Beverly, Mass.) hit a double then scored on a bunt by Andrew Deloury(Andover, Mass.), who later scored on an error to make the final5-0.
 
The Rams' Matt DiCato (Winthrop, Mass.) went six innings, yielding nine hits, five runs with three strikeouts to slip to 2-3 on the year.
 
 
Game 2
 
In the second game, the Vikings completed the sweep of the Rams with another impressive pitching performance by Tim Woods (Wilmington, Mass.). 
 
After a scoreless first three innings, the Vikings got on the board when Ethan Trowt (Beverly, Mass.) emptied the bases when he turned a hit and a three base error to give Salem State a 3-0 lead.  Trowt came home on a Cahill single making it a 4-0 game going into the fifth inning.

Matt Burgess (Kingston, Mass.) hit an RBI double in the sixth to account for the Vikings fifth run. 

The Rams got on the board in the seventh when Kevin Driscoll (Chelmsford, Mass.) doubled and scored on an RBI single by Billy Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.).
 
Woods (2-0) threw a complete game seven-hitter for the Vikings with six strikeouts, while the Rams Zack Kirby (Rochester, Mass.) took the loss, going six innings surrendering seven hits and three earned runs with seven strikeouts to go to 1-3 on the year.
 
Salem State's next game will be a doubleheader at home against the Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Friday beginning at 2 p.m.  Framingham State plays a doubleheader at home on Friday starting at 2 p.m. against Westfield State University.
