Baseball Blanks Western New England, 4-0

Springfield, Mass. - The Framingham State Unviersity baseball team received three hits apiece from juniors Ivan Colon (Waltham, Mass.) and Mark Mainini (Hull, Mass.) as the Rams defeated Western New England 4-0 this afternoon in non-conference action at Pat Ricci Field.

The Rams even their overall record at 11-11 while WNE falls to 8-12 on the season.
Freshman Mike Andrews (Stoneham, Mass.) tossed six strong innings to improve his season record to 5-0.  Andrews did not surrender a run while scatter four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.  Junior Tommy Simas (Cambridge, Mass.) tossed two innings of scoreless relief, while freshman Manny Powers (Malden, Mass.) tossed one.

Senior Steve Ambrosino and junior Matt Anziano each had two hits for Western New England.  Sophomore pitcher David Cherry turned in a quality start for the Golden Bears, allowing just two earned runs (three total) and scattering six hits in six innings of work while striking out five.

Mainini paced the Rams offense by going 3-for-5 with a run batted in on a double in the fifth inning. Colon also had three hits, including a double. Framingham outhit WNE 11 to 7 as the two teams combined to leave 20 runners on base.

The Rams gave Andrews all the support he needed in the top of the third. Leadoff batter Matt Roberge (Lowell, Mass.) reached on a fielding error and then stole two bases before crossing the plate on a throwing error trying to catch him stealing third base. Framingham added insurance runs in the fourth, fifth and ninth innings--the latter a home run off the bat of senior Anthony Iafolla (Medfield, Mass.), who entered the game as a pinch-runner in the third.

Western New England hosts another non-conference foe in Keene State at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, while the Rams face the University of Massachusetts Boston at 6 p.m. at Campanelli Field in Brockton.
