Baseball Opens Campaign with Sweep of Alfred

Winter Haven, Fla. – The Framingham State University opened the 2014 season this afternoon sweeping a doubleheader with Alfred State.  The Rams took the opener 4-2 before cruising to a 13-2 victory in the nightcap at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

Senior Matt DiCato (Winchester, Mass.) picked up the victory in the opener going six innings and surrendering two earned runs on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts.  Freshman Manny Powers (Malden, Mass.) tossed an inning of scoreless relief with a pair of strikeouts to earn his first save.

The Rams erased a 2-0 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to pick up the victory.  Junior Mark Mainini (Hull, Mass.) drove in the Rams first run with an RBI single and senior Matt Roberge (Lowell, Mass.) plated three with a bases clearing double.

Roberge finished the game with a pair of hits while classmate Billy Berosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.) also chipped in with two hits.

In the night cap, the Rams got on the board in the top of the first with three runs and never looked back.  Junior Ivan Colon (Waltham, Mass.) led the offensive surge with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate with two runs scored an RBI.  Sophomore outfielder Jake Wardwell (Hudson, Mass.) chipped in a pair of hits, a pair of runs scored and drove in three, while Derosier went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

Sophomore Dillon Corliss (Winterport, ME) picked up the victory on the hill going five innings and allowing one run, earned, on seven hits with strikeouts.
